Corporal John R. Thorp was inducted into the Army on 24 April 1944. He served in Italy during World War II. Thorp was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 913th Field Artillery Battalion when he was discharged on 14 December 1945. On 5 November 1947, he enlisted in the Navy Reserve in Kansas City, MO.
